Honestly, I never understood what was so frightening about talking to girls and trying to get a date, especially when it's someone you are just meeting and may never or rarely ever see again.

It can only go one of three ways: she could say yes and go on the date, say no but just be friends, or say hell no altogether.

No offense, but don't be such a chicken ****, just ask her!

Need a not-so-cheesy line that usually works for me? Say "I'm not usually this straightfoward, but you seem like a really interesting person and I was kind of hoping to get to know you better. Would you maybe like to go to [insert local place of interest here] with me on [available day of week] night?"

All your questions will be answered when she responds, then you can sulk or strut all the way home (depending on her response, of course). :)

I disagree, very very small discount

Apple should have extended the full education discount of 14% to students. As much as I love Apple's products, they're very much an overly greedy company these days. They're also possibly being myopic, as students are highly likely to buy content for the device IMO

    Very shameful Apple

Shameful? Really? What are you talking about?

First off, Apple has already priced these products very competitively at their standard prices. Second, Apple does not provide a standard discount of 14% for their computers to students. It varies from product to product. Thirdly, you can rest assured that Apple, having learned from their "no price umbrella" tactic for the $99 3G and how successful that has been, recognizes that they have to begin offering lower prices on their products.

Dude, seriously, it's $499. That's $100 more than a crappy netbook that won't do half the stuff this thing can do.

Great job, Apple. No shame in your game here.

The iPad is not a tablet PC. You can still pay $2,000 for a tablet PC if you want. The iPad is a tablet yes, but it doesn't run a full blown deskptop OS (I'm not getting into that argument).

My point is, Apple used to offer excellent discounts to students and teachers across all of it's product ranges. It's a shame they're not offering the same with the iPad.

They still offer those discounts. The only reason the percentage of the discount has dropped is because the cost of the computers has also dropped. My 20" iMac G4 cost me $2649 after the student discount back in 2004. For that today, I can get a Mac Pro.

iPod discount? Not needed. iPods are anywhere from $50 to $125 less than what they were 4 years ago. Again, no discount needed.

Really irrelevant for the schools. I can't say this will change our purchasing strategy in this area either way, the discount is too small to matter really.

Untrue when you have schools purchasing by the thousands, as many university's are considering doing for incoming freshman, just as they did with the iPod touch, White MacBook, and iPhone at places like Duke U.

Those ten packs can truly add up. And in this economy, every dollar counts.

Think about the cost schools and students will save on books when publishers begin to offer more and more text books via download versus the 20lb. text that sits on a shelf at the campus bookstore for $175. Then you try to resell at the end of the semester, and guess what? The text has been updated to it's 13th edition, and now you're stuck with it.

Apple's done a great job by pricing these at rock bottom prices already, especially when we all expected prices to be at $899 and up.

I bet my students can't wait to run products like AutoCad, Final Cut Pro, Logic, Sonar and Visual Studio, on the ipad. They'll be so excited I'm sure.

It's just a glorified web slate and note taker. By no means bad but I don't see any students where I work, or staff for that matter, rushing to get one. We may buy one or two for R&D.

I completely agree. It's probably being aimed at the computing illiterate or perhaps commuters but in its current form with an iPhone OS, it's just not powerful or versatile enough for the vast majority of students.

How about we reserve final judgement until we actually use one, m'kay?

In respect to the dedicated graphics card, I totally agree with you here. I keep saying it, but a dedicated gaming machine made in the Apple style would absolutely vault them 5% in share overnight. Maybe more.

However in my experience, fewer people are waiting on Vista for a new machine than you may think. I'm really surprised at how little buzz Vista is getting. I've got several friends with HIGH END hardware running Vista beta now, and the all think it works great except for Aero, which to a person they have all turned off. Every single one of them complains about the speed, but say it is very solid crash-wise, especially for a beta. But when I press them if they will actually buy Vista the day it comes out, all but one said no. The main reason is that there is just nothing all that compelling there. And what with significant evidence ( that they have completely re-written their networking stack, I think I'll be with them on the sidelines waiting for a while until they work the bugs out.

So at least in my limited experience, people who need new hardware are buying it now - and not really waiting for Vista, which may be 9-12 months off for them anyway. What this means to me is that Apple's marketshare increases can be written off as an anomaly all that easily.

Thanks for the interesting podcast link. I wasn't unaware of Vista's possible security problems, I just never realized how bad the worst case scenario could be...despite all the delayed launches. Yes, potentially a hackers paradise, but I'd still be surprised if the final version of Vista wasn't far more secure than previous versions of W$.

I think you're right that some people will be wary of becoming early adopters of Vista in light of all the cited beta-version problems. Many may wait for a Vista SP edition (some 12 months away). Also, there's bound to be some initial confusion for less savvy PC users when faced with 6 different versions of Vista. Despite this, I still expect many millions to be swayed by M$'s mass advertizing campaigns to take the plunge soon after launch.

But like you, I think none of this need greatly affect Apple's steady rise in marketshare. For sure, Mac OS X will remain the best & most secure OS there is. I just have growing doubts about whether Apple's lack of dedicated graphics in their consumer Macs, combined with the novelty of M$'s new baby, won't cost Apple dearly in the long term. - I very much hope I'll be proved wrong.

Once I have a decent method of getting my movies from my computer to my TV (i.e. iTV), and iTunes has more selection, I plan on never buying another DVD again. I'm in the minority here I'm sure, but for how long? How long before digital distribution is the method of choice for your average Joe?

I agree, except for one little thing===> HD Content distribution. No real solution for that one yet. You can't very easily d/l a 25GB HD movie. Even compressed, it's a massive freakin' file. I don't think there's a comsumer level internet connection that could support such content offerings.

So where does that leave us? We'll be able to d/l SD movies & TV. Brick and Mortar retailers can continue to sell hard copies with special features and HD DVD/Blu-Ray discs as well. Any retailer worth their weight in liquid soap will markup premium content and delivery formats, and everything will work out fine, until the next big change or trend.

I must agree with everyone who is in essence saying: "I'll download, stream to the TV, and if I need higher quality, special features or a hard copy, I'll stumble to the store (or online retailer) and but the disc.

I don't see how these delivery methods can't work hand in hand.

Ok, but when a road changes and you don't have the newest map then what are you doing? Manually downloading is what.

I'd rather it be an automatic process.

Both methods have drawbacks: "Not always available" vs. "Not always current."
Given that I've never had a problem with availability, I'm actually interested in an app that promises to stay current without my having to download maps manually ahead of time.

Every situation is different, granted, but a re-route due to road change is so much less likely to occur than a traffic congestion re-route or other spur of the moment situation. If you're not in a 3G area, forget it. I'll take my chances with an "outdated" map than I will with not being able to quickly access any map at all every time.

So many of the switchers are college kids. A few
months ago they had an article about how the
market share in college is really falling more toward
mac, more than ever before. Apple is getting them
young, and that will pay off in the long run. I got
my first Mac when I started college and now that
I finished, I got a new one. The new laptops have
made a huge dent in this age group, so that is what
a lot of this whole market share increase is caused by.

I when to France once before. I remember the cheapest gas had an octane rating of 95 or so, the next level up was 98 octane. I'm assuming that regular in the UK is around 95 octane as well? That tops what get. Our gas starts at 87 octane and tops out at 93 octane for so called premium (about $0.40 per gallon more than regular where I'm at).

Anyhow, judging by how our gas is priced, it's about 2x what we pay here in the States. You win some (having better cars), you lose some (higher priced gas).

Yes 95 octane is the lowest and there are also brands like Shell V-Power and BP Ultimate that offer up to 102 octane.

I always go with the 95 octane version and my car gets about 41mpg (US) using this fuel.

Make the RAM user upgradable even if it means only having one ram slot. I really feel strongly about this because it seems that the MBA is morphing into a full functional iPad with a keyboard. :(

I can not help wonder if this is going to put more laptops in landfills this way. There are many people that can't afford ordering the ultimate BTO option and are able to upgrade the components over time.

It looks like everyone else has covered the basics. The bottom line is: Don't Worry. You'll do fine.

As best I can remember, all of my experiences with anesthesia have been of the IV persuasion. The medicine feels warm going in, and when counting backwards from 100, I rarely make it past 96. ;)

Like others have said, when you wake up, one of your first sensations will be to wonder: "Well, when are we going to get started?" You will almost certainly say some goofy things to the nurse or whoever's monitoring you; don't worry, they're used to it.

You really do need to arrange for someone to take you home. There's no way I'd try to manage a cab ride home while still "under the influence." Even though the hospital's released you, you'll still likely be a little loopy for awhile. And you will sleep a good while once you get home.

I don't remember if anyone's said this, but if you're a little anxious about the anesthesia, they can give you something to calm you down beforehand. They did this for me once when my doc was running late (tied up in a prior surgery) and my procedure was postponed a little bit. The delay gave me a little more time to get worried about things, and so they gave me a shot of something that didn't knock me out, but did help me to relax. wdlove probably knows what I'm talking about.

Yep, it's those pesky 25MB images and 1080P video that keep me at my desk with my iMac. I would love to be able to touch up my full-sized images on the iPad. Give it 5 years.

I don't think it needs 5 years, the hardware is already powerful enough to handle image editing and sorting it just needs a well designed app and someway of assessing wireless storage.
